Anthropic's Claude for Startups: What It Offers and How to Prepare for the Next Cohort
Anthropic has paused applications to its startup program after the current cohort filled up. Here's what the program actually offers, who it suits, and how to get your company ready for the next cohort.
If your startup is building a product on Claude, Anthropic's Claude for Startups program is worth watching closely. First, though, one important update: applications are currently closed. The official page says the current cohort is full, that interest was "far higher than expected," and that applications still under review were not advanced. Those applicants were emailed and encouraged to apply to the next cohort, which has no announced date yet.
This guide covers what the program actually offers according to the official page, separates that from what third-party sites report, and lists practical steps to prepare for the next round.
What the program offers
According to the official program page, members get:
- Up to $45,000 in discounts and credits from companies building with Claude, bundled as the Claude Startup Stack: tools for sales, design, data, meetings and engineering. Offers are redeemed with codes in the Claude Console. Note that this is the value of partner offers, not direct Claude API credit.
- Up to $100,000 in additional API credits for founders backed by a venture capital firm in Anthropic's partner network. These credits are claimed through the VC, not directly from Anthropic.
- Live Applied AI sessions every other week with Anthropic's team, including an open Q&A.
- Invitations to events, hackathons and community meetups for Claude-based startups.
The page also states that startup credits apply only to the first-party Claude API through the Claude Console. They can't be used on AWS, Google Cloud, Azure or other third-party platforms.
Who is it for?
The official page describes the program as being for "early-stage founders building on Claude" and states no explicit funding requirement. VC backing comes into play only for the extra $100,000 track.
However, older versions of the program's terms, quoted by sites that track startup perks, required the following for API credits:
- Equity funding from an institutional investor.
- A company founded within the last four years.
- No previous startup credits from Anthropic.
We can't confirm whether those criteria still apply to the next cohort, but they're a useful signal. A bootstrapped company may find the direct-credit track harder than an investor-backed one.
What about companies in Egypt and the Middle East? Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Algeria are all on Anthropic's official list of supported countries for its products and API, and the program page lists no geographic restrictions. Whether any regional VC or accelerator is part of Anthropic's partner network isn't public, because Anthropic doesn't publish its partner list.
How applying worked
When applications were open, published guides described these steps:
- Create a Claude Console account with a company email address. Some guides warn against personal addresses such as Gmail.
- Fill in a short form: company website and a brief description of what you're building with Claude.
- Wait for review. If accepted, credits are added to your Console account.
Anthropic doesn't publish an official response time or official rejection reasons. Timelines quoted elsewhere, such as "one to three weeks," are unconfirmed.
How to prepare for the next cohort
The program runs in cohorts and the current one filled quickly, so preparing early makes a difference:
- Subscribe to the newsletter on the official program page to hear as soon as the next cohort opens.
- Set up your Claude Console account now with your company email, and actually use the API in your product. Published guides advise describing concretely what you're building on Claude.
- Make your website clear and current: what you build, for whom, and where Claude fits in.
- If you have an investor, ask directly whether they're in Anthropic's partner network, since the $100,000 track goes through them.
- Have your numbers ready: users, paying customers or usage volume. Traction is one of the factors guides mention when discussing selection.
If you're not accepted, or applications aren't open yet
The program isn't the only route. You can start on pay-as-you-go pricing and watch costs closely from day one. Claude's official prices vary by model: the lighter Haiku models cost far less than Sonnet and Opus, and they're enough for many tasks such as classification and answering routine questions. Matching each task to the right model can save a large share of the budget, even without free credits.
The major cloud providers run their own startup programs too. Remember, though, that Anthropic's startup credits don't work on those platforms, and whether AWS or Google Cloud credits cover Claude on Bedrock or Vertex AI is something to confirm with each provider.
The bottom line
Claude for Startups offers real value: partner offers, regular sessions with Anthropic's team, and a large extra credit for startups backed by partner VCs. But the current cohort is full and the next one has no announced date. The best move now is to build your product on Claude, get your company profile ready and subscribe to the newsletter, so you're among the first to apply.
